22 academy nominations for movies screened at the 2007 Venice Film Festival
Several films that were world premiered at the latest edition of the Venice Film Festival have won 22 nominations at the 2008 Academy Awards.
Michael Clayton, Tony Gilroy’s first feature that screened in competition in Venice, has won 7 nominations in the most important categories: Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Achievement in Directing, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Score), and Best Original Screenplay.
7 nominations as well for the opening film of the 64th Venice Film Festival, Joe Wright’s Atonement, that has already won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture. Nominations include Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Achievement in Costume Design, Best Achievement in Art Direction, Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original score by the Italian film composer Dario Marianelli, who has won the Golden Globe), and Best Adapted Screenplay.
3 nominations for the latest film from the 2007 Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement winner, Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street(Golden Globe winner as best motion picture musical-comedy): Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, Best Achievement in Art Direction (by the Italian Oscar-winners Dante Ferretti and Francesca Lo Schiavo), and Best Achievement in Costume Design.
2 nominations for Andrew Dominik’s second feature, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, that screened in Venice in competition: Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Achievement in Cinematography.
Cate Blanchett has got a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for I’m not There by Todd Haynes, that brought her a Volpi Cup in Venice and a Golden Globe.
Tommy Lee Jones will run for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for In the Valley of Elah by Paul Haggis.
12,directed by Nikita Mikhalkov, the winner of the Special Lion for Overall Work at the latest Venice Film Festival, has got a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year.
